Talks With My Students—-Rob

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

星空

Rob is one of my senior students. He is a special student to me, not because of his big title and his job, but his common touch personality. And his maners and words have totally changed my mind on European cockiness.

The bad memory is still in my mind.

The French senior supervisor of a France company who was my student for one lesson.  Just one lesson, then we finished our teaching contract. Before being his mandarin teacher, he was my interviewer, and I were his interviewee. He seemed more  like a boss,  I were like the one who searching a job from him. We had an interview at the lobby of Radisson. He checked my resume strictly, then he asked me a few questions to test me  if I were qualified to be his mandarin tutor, finally with his nod as an end. It sounded unbelievable that I could pass an extremely strict senior supervisor’s face to face interview. I swear I will not do any of these any more.  The second was the first lesson with him. At first, it was a good start, but then he was not a so nice person, he didn’t care about the culture which he thought he knew all of them or he felt not important to his life here.  So boring of him, wasn’t he?  How could you not care what happen around you? On another aspect, I were not a full-experienced teacher at that time. It was my fault!

Thanks to all my experiences, without each oppotunity, I can’t be as confident as today.

The each talk with Rob was so interesting and meaningful.

I would like to write one by one.

One of the latest talks was about Chinese characters.

My view on teaching Chinese is totally different from most of the mandarin teachers. Survival first! Characters except some survival ones are not recommended to learn until the students have enough energy or knowledge to start, otherwise I will teach them the first thing first.

I taught Rob the rough idea about Chinese characters at the beginning. The pictographic characters, picto-phonetic characters, indicative characters and associative characters are the four main categories of Chinese characters.  I wrote

1.ri

2. yue

3.

shan

 4.      shui

1. 日,(rì) sun

2. 月,(yuè) moon

3. 山,(shān) mountain

4. 水,(shuǐ) water

for him to let him know why we called pictographic characters. And then I wrote

1.

shang

2.

xia

3.

si

1. 上,(shang) up, above

2. 下,      (xia)   down, under

3. 四,       (sì)    four

to explain what are the indicative characters to him. I combined this part with the description on time which was created by myself. I am always so confident when I explain my Time Zone to all my students to make them clear about the different culture background from the understanding of “shang” and “xia” using in time between China and west. Then I say in a way ilustrated with river flowing from up to down in the river bed which has the same concept like time river flowing from “shang” (the past) to “xia”(the future), that’s why we have the words “shangge xingqi”, “shangge yue” for the last week and last month, ”xiage xingqi”, ”xiage yue” for the next week and next month. Not bad ha! :)

I like the imaginative way I used to teach or entertain to my fellow students. Have fun together and learn the language and culture at the same time. It’s not easy job! And I to face some problem during my teaching.

Farewell to my First Chair on Toastmasters Contest

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Here is not a letter to write only to myself, but also a one to every dear fellow members of my dear Westlake Bilingual Toastmasters Club.

Last night, we have smoothly concluded a semi-annual contest, but was it a really successful one?

My answer is NO!

As an officer and one of the organizers of this contest, I feel shame about myself. My failed preparation in the previous period of the event which lead to the off and on or the mistakes during the later contest.

Simba said I were the most powerful woman last night. Nevertheless, I did not take advantage of this rare oppotunity. I only prepared the on-competition part, but neglected the pre-contest section.

Because of my fault, Alan Chen didn’t know the rule for evaluation clearly, and Linda Yang didn’t have enough note time, Junny Chen brought his note paper on the stage as what we do in a regular meeting.

Because of my fault, Selene handed the notes back to the contestants.

Because of my fault, I gave away the criterion on Choice Lee’s speech to all the evaluation contestants. I congradulated his C5 speech, which meant the standard for his target speech is C5.  Even I knew it after the end of the contest when Maggie told me, I should notice to ask ahead of this big event.

Because of my fault, the awarding certifications were not given signatures before the opening.

Because of my fault, I did not announce any emergency rules if  the lots-drawn first contestant had come late, induced the awkward of  Tiantian’s speech. I didn’t prepare any about it! And I should asked Tiantian first in the interview time to relieve the tense atmosphere.

Because of my fault, the time was not controlled very well, time minutes over and only 5 minutes for the break talking.

BUT, I were also very lucky! Even though my practice for the contest was not enough, everyone in the contest room were so active  and friendly. Applause and smile to each contestant.

I were so lucky!  Even if my preparation of the event did not put in place, each officer or member involved in was so patient and helpful. Applause and smile to me.

I were really lucky! Even though the mistakes occured again and again during the contest, everyone attended the meeting was so tolerant and still enjoyed the minutes for competition or silence.

Thank you sooooo much to my dear members and guests! Without your support, I can not stand on that stage. suddenly, there is a voice said to me, Ying, take the Chair, Toastmaster as your position for the coming contest and Wednesday meetings, and keep on doing it, keep on! Never ever give up!

At last, I would like to especially give my thanks to Alex Wang, who recommded me as a Chair for this big event, and thanks to Simba Zhang, who found useful inforations for me, as well as Alex Wang. Junny Chen and Jennifer Li, without you two, our VPEs, I would definitely be confused on the schedule, and thanks to Tony Chu, you are not only a social VPPR, but also a good friend. Thanks a million to everybody!

And big thanks to my dear mama, baba!

Finally, the semi-annual contest ended with a high appraisal.

The wrong usage of English embarrassed me

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

I was the toastmaster of July 29th WLB Toastmasters Club meeting. The day after my birthday. The time I wanted to give myself an oppotunity to challenge myself  at the second day of my 30. The  second time to be hostess of an activity, the first time in English. I still remember my first time, that was 5 years ago. I am very young and full of energy. I weared in my favourite red sweat which today I thought a little bit conservative. Has my taste changed? No, I still keep my simple and casual style. But I know current me will choose more fit ones to tell the inside me. That was a big success. After that New Year Gala, I became famous in my form company. Everybody knew me.

The toast master is even more interesting and challenging. I told Alex one day that I hope I cloud know TOASTMASTERS earlier. This NGO  is not an organization only to improve your English or language skills. If you take this idea in your mind, then I will say don’t come to Toastmasters, there are a lot of other clubs, like English corners, you can join in.  Toastmasters is a place to excel yourself, to complete yourself, to appreciate yourself. Here, you will have a lot of jobs to take. As a speaker, a evaluator, a timer, a grammarian, a toast master, or a sergeant at arms, a secretary, a vice president membership, a president.  Here, you will know where your limitations are and how you can bulid yourselves physically and mentally strong enough to realize your dreams.

At that night, I challenged my limitation, and bulit my body and mind stonger. I knew I could.

But there was a mistake drawing me to an embarrassed situation, and I didn’t aware the seriousness until Alan called me later after the meeting.

I wrote a draw for this event, cause I thought it was an important thing to me. 9 pages! I figued out all the details first in mind and then I noted them down. And practiced before the meeting for about 5 times with counting minutes.  One time in front of mirror! But I should do that more! I totally agree with what  Alex commented to me. Practice with your passion in front of mirror, and just suppose you were at the stage. Vocal variety and natural guetures  should let your audience influenced which is from Simba’s suggestion to me.

So, so, so…… Preparation is not enough no matter how much time and energy you put onto it!

Emergencies occur all the time. I did prepare some words and phrases for the changes in the meeting. There are something you can not prepare, that are called experience and knowledge. Experience and knowledge are life long term accumulation. They are the background of your eduation. Well-eduated or not, your experience tells, as well as your knowledge. The experience checks whether your knowledge is practicle or not, while the knowledge leads you to gain more experience.

I know I am lack of experience and I has a little knowledge. For me, it’s a long way to go to be well educated!

My deep-heart thanks to Alan can’t express my feeling. So I worte this essay.
